DESIRE OF SURFACE.
At the surface of
our body, our senses are especially well developed. It is a pitty to perceive
our skin only as some kind of wrapping that we carry with us, that separates us
from the environment and sometimes gives us information about it. In a dance,
in a contact improvisation, we miss a lot when we are not able to shift our
attention to the surface, to be active here, let any part of the skin lead the
movement. What happens when we change the point of view? Start perceiving the
skin as antennae. Use the ability of the skin to react with movement. Reveal
that the skin has its own will and logic, according to which it changes its
shape, has a particular way how to approach, stretch in a chosen direction,
look for stimuli. The skin itself, prior to the rest of the body, can set off
into the space, while the rest of the body just goes along. In a contact with
partner, we learn how surprisingly can the rest of the body follow the plasticity
of the skin. We will learn how to capture with our skin, use the weight of the
skin. Keep smooth connection with the skin. Push away our weight with the skin
that is touching our partner. We will observe, how our movement changes when
its fulcrum shifts to the surface. Skin is a wild animal, nimble and impulsive,
decisive and independent. The longing hidden in our skin is strong and clear,
whatever its aim is. When the stimulus for an action comes from the skin, the
whole body and also the center activates and organizes in a way that can lead
to a realization of the surface intention. We will come from the place of
pleasure, enjoying of the touch. Our result should be the feeling of security,
a strange softness of our movement that instantly reacts to the changing
forces, smooth spreading of weight and accuracy without stiff concentration.
Zita Pavlištová (Czech republic)
Zita is
teacher of contact improvisation in Czech Republic. In her work, she connected
the special technique of body movement with contact improvisation. She shares
the art of the movement based on listening to our body. In her work, she seeks
for limits and loves extremes. She inquires into the body in movement and its
connection with mind. She uses long, still and conscious watching to the inner
movement, as well as pace, lose of control and risk – situations where body
needs to be given an implicit trust. „Through the body, it’s possible to
understand a lot. Just listen to the ways how it speaks to us. My body is wise,
it teaches me much more than all of my teachers. And at the same time it is
willing to be taught. It’s not a good idea to force it in any way, it’s better
to trust it boundlessly. Then it manages things that we have never even dreamed
about.“ Zita operates in Prague. She founded Druna - the space for CI, dance
and movement. (www.druna.cz) 7years she is director of this centre, she leads
her classes here, she holds evening and weekend jams, also she invites teachers
from the world. Every year she is organising the month of international summer
workshops in Eagle mountains. Today, she teaches in Prague and in the whole
Czech Republic, and also in Spain, Germany and Poland.
